Do Testosterone Supplements Really Work?
Many men have been intrigued by commercials promising renewed youth and vigor, not to mention freedom from a variety of unpleasant side effects of aging, if only they take XYZ testosterone supplements, to renew vigor, vitality, and so much more. The problem is, few magic pills can help restore lost health and vitality and many of the problems associated with low testosterone are also signs and symptoms of larger health concerns that need to be addressed.
Do Testosterone Supplements Actually Work?
Scientifically speaking, there have been mixed results related to whether or not testosterone supplements really work to deliver all the benefits they claim to offer. Supplements have been purported to offer a wide variety of miraculous results for men, offering cures for all kinds of ills, including:
- Low sex drive
- Reduced muscle mass
- Sexual dysfunction in men
- Emotional changes
- Extreme or chronic fatigue
- Belly fat accumulation
Some supplements even claim to help increase size penis size, boost stamina, and more. Unfortunately, none of the products you see advertised as testosterone supplements actually contain testosterone. Supplements that do contain testosterone are only available with prescriptions as they have been categorized as controlled substances in the U.S.
Why are Testosterone Supplements Controlled?
While many fret over the signs of aging and growing old that manifest in the forms of diminished sexual interest and prowess, a bulging belly, and fatigue, testosterone supplements are not necessarily the answer.
WebMD reports that there are very real risks associated with testosterone supplements that need to be addressed, including heightened risks of heart attacks and strokes among those using these products. In fact, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration now requires that all products containing testosterone now carry warnings about the risks.
Before considering testosterone supplements, however, it might be well worth exploring other potential causes of your current state, including:
- Medications, specifically opiates, antidepressants, and beta-blockers though other medications may cause similar reactions
- Obesity
- Chronic illnesses
Of course, there are other potential causes as well, such as certain health conditions like diabetes and cardiac diseases. Visit a doctor that specializes in testosterone therapy and explore you options with this type of treatment.
